Letter to the Editor: Not another liquor store
By GuestDear Editor:
I am writing to voice my surprise about the town’s approval of a very large liquor store in Cobb’s Corner, as reported in the December 1 edition of the Canton Citizen. As the article stated, there are already four places of business that sell wine, beer and/or liquor in Cobb’s Corner.
I called the selectmen’s office to ask why the town of Canton would want another liquor store, especially so close to others. I was told that this was a private business and that it was fine to approve this license. Another question: what will the ramifications of such a large “discount” liquor store do to those other stores that have been in business for many years? Does Canton want to be known as the liquor town? Liquor is not just another item. It is not like donuts and coffee, hamburgers or clothing. It is a controlled substance. The existing stores have policed their sales seemingly very well. Why are we, as a town, looking to increase the number of potential locations for problems?
I called the Alcohol Beverage Control Commission and they said that they will have the last say. If you feel as I do, please call the licensing division at 617-727-3040 ext. 720 and ask them not to approve this license. We do not need another liquor store.
