Searching for silver linings in post-election America
By Canton CitizenDear Editor:
I never thought I would see states’ rights as a good thing, since my governor (George Wallace) used it as an excuse to rob people of color of their human rights. But attorneys general Healey and Schneiderman give me hope. So what if Trump puts in an EPA head who wants to destroy the EPA; same for Trump’s pick for energy secretary, the former Texas governor who couldn’t remember this was the department that he wanted to destroy. We are not completely vulnerable to this amoral wannabe despot.
At least Canton was smart enough not to go for his lies — Clinton won convincingly here, 57 percent to 37 percent. Last week at the Senior Center holiday party, another wonderfully socialistic event we have annually, I thanked one of our selectmen for writing the ‘Statement of Solidarity’ (my name for it), which reaffirmed our community values and called on all residents to “stand together” regardless of political affiliation.
The selectmen would never have considered making that statement of solidarity were it nor for the precarious position we find ourselves in. This was not like every other election we’ve had … we stand a real chance of not seeing another “regular” election.
The worse our schools become, the more ignorant we are and the less competent to rule ourselves. Our Canton schools are improving daily, on the other hand. I spoke to a School Committee member about my hope that every Canton child be taught the Bill of Rights with essays on what they mean, as well as the Constitution. She mentioned the fact that our Problem Solvers and debaters know these things, but I am speaking to the only hope for our “delicate experiment” — that is, that the common man, the non-elite kid, should know as much about our democratic structure as the elite problem solvers do. Some of the comments on the Facebook group Everything Canton, MA make me think otherwise.
I hope our civic education does not come at the price of our constitutional government.
