Boys hoop erupts for 84 in memorable 1st win
By Mike BergerCHS boys basketball coach Ryan Gordy has said repeatedly that he needs other players to step up and take some of the scoring load off top players Tony Harris and Devin Foster, and the team answered the call in a big way last Thursday at Middleboro.
Losers of three straight to open the season, the Bulldogs made their first win a memorable one, scoring 84 points in a 40-point blowout victory over the 1-2 Sachems, a Division 2 school.
Junior forward Austin Maffie scored 23 points off the bench for Canton, including five three-pointers, and senior guard Eric Olshaker showed great hustle, aggressiveness, and rebounding skills as he finished with 15 points and seven boards. Harris, a junior captain, and Foster, a sophomore, scored 14 points each while senior center Brian Albert added eight points and five rebounds and was a defensive presence inside.
Although he only scored three points on one shot, junior guard Jake Verille led an outstanding offensive attack that featured excellent passing, ball movement, and good offensive looks.
Canton never trailed in the game and blew it wide open in the second quarter, taking a 42-19 lead into halftime and increasing the lead to 59-32 after three quarters.
The Bulldog defense was also a big key to the victory, forcing seven turnovers in the first quarter alone and 22 for the game.
“The defense helped fuel our offense and it’s nice to see that,” said Gordy. “We caused some turnovers early that led to some transition baskets for us. Austin erupted, Eric stepped in, and it was a great team win as we executed, ran, had great ball movement, made our shots, and played with a lot of energy.”
“It was nice to get out of the tough Hockomock League, hit the reset button with a couple of nonleague contests, and then hit the Davenport Division again,” Gordy added.
Now 1-3, the Bulldogs were due to face Archbishop Williams on January 3 followed by a home game tomorrow against North Attleboro at 6:30 p.m.
