Canton Public Library announces free genealogy series

By

Join the Canton Public Library on Saturdays this winter for a free series on researching your family history, including tips on getting started, online resources, and specific ancestral groups and regions. The first program on Saturday, January 28, at 2 p.m. will cover some of the basics of genealogy research, including what resources the Canton Public Library has to offer. Subsequent programs will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 11, and Saturday, March 4.

libraryThe series kicks off one week from this Saturday with a lecture by Michael Brophy, a nationally known professional genealogical researcher from the Boston area. Brophy will discuss some of the reasons that people find the study of their forefathers so compelling and will explain some of the basic methodology behind genealogical research. Other topics to be explored include record sources (census, passenger lists, naturalizations, cemeteries) and recent advances in the field.

On February 11, Mike Maglio from Origin Hunters will provide an in-depth look at genetic genealogy, which involves the use of DNA testing to determine the level of genetic relationship between individuals. Learn about your deep ancestry or break through the brick walls in your genealogy research. Maglio is a third generation genealogist whose focus combines science and history to unravel ancestral genetic migrations.

The third and final program, scheduled for March 4, is a presentation by Lori Lyn Price entitled “Oral Interviews: Connect with the Living Past.” This presentation on conducting successful oral interviews designed to obtain genealogical information and family stories will focus on lessons the speaker learned through both successful and unsuccessful oral interviews with her grandfathers. Price will focus on preparation for the interview, including how to approach the subject, deciding which questions to ask, and choosing the appropriate equipment. She will briefly discuss how to handle situations that may arise during the interview, interview etiquette, and transcription of the completed interview.

Guests can pick and choose whatever programs they are interested in — or come to them all. All programs will be held in the Community Room and no registration is required. This series is sponsored by the Friends of the Canton Public Library. For more information, contact Carolyn Elkort, community outreach librarian, at 781-821-5027 ext. 126.
