Track team members impress despite loss to NA
By Mike BergerBoth CHS outdoor track teams lost to a tough North Attleboro squad in their season opening meet last Tuesday, April 11. Despite the loss, several track team members qualified for state competition.
“Both teams have a lot of potential with a great mix of returners and newcomers,” noted head track coach Anna Amico.
In the 400-meter hurdles, Riley McDonnell qualified for the state meet with a personal-best time of 60.9 seconds, and in the 400m Muhammad Sambo placed second and qualified for the state meet with a personal-best time of 52.5 seconds. John Guenthner set a new personal best and qualified for states in the 110m hurdles with a second-place time of 16.5 seconds. Also placing were Dan Alice, second in the 100m, and Ian Ozer, third in the shot put with a best throw of 40 feet, 10 inches.
For the girls team, Sarah Collins was the lone winner as she took first in the 800m with a time of 2:29.6. Canton also had two top-three finishers in the 100m with Nicole Brown placing second in 13.2 seconds and Claire Belisle placing third in 13.3 seconds. Other top performers were Leianna Brune, third, 400m, 64.5s; and Chloe Pennacchio, third, two mile, 14:26.
Team captains this season are Will Amico, Jack Healey, Matt Floyd and Owen Guerini for the boys team and Hannah Link, Claire Belisle, Olivia Stevens, Maggie Dunn for the girls team. Both teams will participate in the Warrior Invitational at Foxboro on Thursday (today) and then prepare for their home openers against Milford on Tuesday, April 25, at 3:45 p.m.
