CHS baseball team edges Sharon for season’s first win
By Mike BergerSophomore Paul Corcoran had his best pitching performance of the season and the CHS bats came alive as the Bulldogs hung on for their first win of the spring, 4-3 over Sharon last week. It was the young team’s best performance of the season, combining good starting pitching, timely hitting, and solid relief pitching.
Leading the way were several of the team’s sophomores, including Corcoran, Robbie Sullivan, and Matt Pigeon.
Corcoran threw five scoreless innings while displaying a good command of the strike zone. “Paul threw a lot of strikes and was very solid,” said head coach Greg Digirolamo, who earned his first win as CHS coach.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning as Corcoran and Jake Aronson led off with singles, advanced on a nice bunt by Matt Casamento, and came home on a key two-run single by Pigeon. Canton then added two more runs in the third inning, both unearned, to increase its lead to 4-0.
The Eagles got back in the game with a bases-clearing, three-run double in the sixth inning, but Sullivan came on in relief and shut the door on the Eagles’ bats, earning a two-inning save.
Digirolamo said besides the win, the team got in some good practices during vacation week, allowing them to implement some new strategy and signs.
The Bulldogs closed out April vacation week at 1-5 overall and were due to play three games this week: at Foxboro Monday, versus Stoughton Wednesday, and versus Franklin today at 3:45 p.m. Canton then travels to Taunton on Monday, May 1, followed by a home game next Wednesday against Oliver Ames starting at 3:45 p.m.
