School Committee approves assistant supt. position
By Mike BergerThe Canton School Committee met last Thursday, May 18, to approve a new but temporary assistant superintendent of special projects position.
The school operating budget for the next fiscal year (FY18), approved at the May town meeting, included funding for a new director of elementary curriculum and instruction. However, School Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Fischer-Mueller said the position should be changed to “advance a very ambitious agenda for the improvement of Canton Public Schools.”
Fischer-Mueller said the new position will combine aspects of the director of elementary curriculum and instruction with other responsibilities identified by the central office administrative team. Some of the special projects under consideration are strengthening processes in human resources; creating an organizational chart and job descriptions for the central office; analyzing how to make productive use of student assessment data; developing the K-5 grade level team leader structure to support collaboration; and supporting the rollout of the school facilities master plan, which is currently under development.
In addition, the new administrator will advance the development of the Canton Public Schools’ strategic framework and work with the superintendent to develop “Indicators of Excellence,” with a strategy of communicating with the Canton community about the state of the schools.
The superintendent said the position will be evaluated in one or two years. The position will be posted this week and Fischer-Mueller expects to bring a candidate to the School Committee by June 8. The committee will conduct its regularly scheduled meeting tonight, May 25, at 7 p.m. in the CHS distance learning lab.
