Canton A’s climb back to .500 with 3-1 week
By Mike BergerThe Canton A’s evened their record at 8-8 and are right in the thick of a playoff chase after winning three of four games in Cranberry Baseball League action last week.
The A’s defeated Quincy 11-8 last week and swept Whitman on the road on Sunday, 8-0 and 6-1. In all three wins, the A’s got good pitching and timely hitting from several batters.
After falling to Quincy 10-0 in the first game of last Thursday’s doubleheader, the A’s bounced back in game two with an 11-8 win. Justin Hutchinson of Stoughton drew the start and pitched four-plus innings while Nate Pederson of Sharon came on in relief to preserve the win. A seven-run fourth gave the A’s a commanding 9-3 lead. Cory Albanese led the way offensively with a triple, two singles and two RBIs, and Zach Courier belted a two-run homerun. Nick Radcliffe added two singles and an RBI while Pat Vartanian of Canton had a hit and two RBIs.
In Sunday’s doubleheader against Whitman, Pederson’s pitching helped propel the A’s to a shutout win in game one as he limited the Nationals to just three hits while striking out three batters in a game shortened by the slaughter rule. Radcliffe had a pair of singles in the win while Aidan Cahill had a double. Ryan Smith, Steve Dilanian, and Courier also chipped in with RBI singles.
Radcliffe, normally the A’s first baseman, pitched the squad to a 6-1 win in the second game as he limited Whitman to four hits over six innings while striking out four batters. Dilanian had a two-run homerun and Nate Porack had a single and a double. Matt Cunningham chipped in with a key single and Smith had an RBI double.
After traveling to Bourne on Tuesday, the A’s were due to return home to face undefeated Braintree (17-0) tonight at 6 p.m., followed by a doubleheader this Sunday at Acushnet with games starting at 5 and 7 p.m.
