Former hoops standout joins Vassar coaching staff
By Jay TurnerCanton native and NCAA Division III national basketball champion Matthew Droney has joined the Vassar College men’s basketball coaching staff as a full-time assistant for the 2017-18 season.
The appointment makes Droney, at age 23, one of the youngest full-time assistant college basketball coaches in the country. A 2017 graduate of Babson College, the former Catholic Memorial standout recently captained his team to the NCAA Division III national title. During his three years with Babson, Droney helped lead the Beavers to a record of 83-11 while also earning appearances in the Division III semifinals twice.
In the national title game this year, Droney was a key contributor as he scored eight points on 3-of-3 shooting in a thrilling 79-78 win over Augustana (IL). For the season, Droney played in 32 games while posting one of the team’s best assist-to-turnover ratios.
Before Babson, Droney was a four-year letter winner at CM, serving as a captain during his junior and senior seasons and earning Boston Herald Dream Team and Boston Globe Super Team accolades. He also collected Catholic League MVP honors as a senior and was an All-Catholic League honoree for three seasons, scoring over 1,000 points for his career.
Droney has worked as a basketball coach with Massachusetts Premier Courts, coordinating drills and activities along with ensuring positive camp experiences. He also was a trainer for 94 Fifth Basketball Technologies, providing intensive, customized workouts for small groups.
Droney is the son of Julie and Henry (Hank) Droney of Canton and has two siblings: Colin, who is headed to the University of Michigan to play lacrosse, and Maggie, who is a junior at Ursuline Academy and a member of the school’s track team.
