Bridge work to resume at Canton Junction MBTA station

MBTA commuter rail riders may soon see a return to normalcy at the Canton Junction train station now that a construction stoppage has been resolved and a timeline reestablished, according to a spokesman for commuter rail operator Keolis CS.

In a statement provided to the Citizen via email, Tory Mazzola, director of public affairs for Keolis, indicated that work on the pedestrian bridge on the Providence side of the station, which had been delayed since April, would resume this week.

“Over the past couple weeks, we have been working with local and state officials, including MassDOT, the MBTA and the state building inspector, to resolve this unexpected construction challenge as quickly as possible,” stated Mazzola. “We’ve reached a resolution and will resume work on [July 5] and expect to have this project completed in three weeks. We appreciate the patience of our passengers as we make this investment and work through these unexpected challenges.”

While neither Keolis nor the MBTA has commented on the specific nature of the “construction challenges,” multiple sources previously told the Citizen that the stoppage was ordered by the state Department of Public Safety due to permitting concerns. The town of Canton seemed to confirm this in a post on its website, reporting that the MassDOT legal team and the Department of Public Safety were scheduled to meet to “discuss whether state building permits are necessary for the Canton Junction Ramp and Sidewalk Project.”

Regardless of the specific cause of the delays, the reported resolution is certainly welcome news for Canton Junction patrons, who had grown increasingly frustrated over the lack of communication from the MBTA and Keolis concerning the status of the bridge work as well as the lack of progress on the bridge itself, which has resulted in lengthy detours for anyone parking on the Providence side of the station.
