The Canton Citizen is pleased to introduce a new Athlete of the Week feature. The first athlete to receive this honor is Griffin Roach, a junior midfielder on the CHS boys soccer team.

A talented two-way player in the midfield, Roach had a monster week for the Bulldogs against three tough Hockomock League opponents, accounting for four of the team’s five goals and assisting on the other one as the team improved to 2-1-1 overall. Roach opened the week with a bang, scoring twice within a 10-minute span to help narrow a 3-0 deficit against Kelley-Rex Division leader Mansfield. He then went on to score both goals in Canton’s 2-1 home win against King Philip, and he finished off the week by notching an assist on Paul Corcoran’s goal in a 1-1 draw against North Attleboro.

An All-Hockomock honorable mention selection last season as a sophomore, Roach has already established himself as one of the league’s elite players, notes head coach Danny Erickson. “He has great vision, he plays hard, and he’s a very smart player,” said Erickson. “He’s a very talented kid and a very driven kid, but he’s also a team-oriented player, so he’s got all of the pieces. And this [week’s production] wasn’t a fluke, either. I expect him to have similar weeks like this moving forward.”

Honorable Mention: Alec Ragusa (football), Joey Vaughan (golf), Maggie Malloy (field hockey)
