The Canton Fire Department responded to 78 service calls last week, including a February 6 truck fire on I-95 south in the vicinity of University Avenue. Man charged with B&E at Rubin Court

Police arrested a 60-year-old Rubin Court resident last Friday after he allegedly broke into a neighbor’s home and threatened her. The suspect, Donald S. MacDougal, was arrested around 6:45 p.m. and charged with breaking and entering (misdemeanor), disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and threatening to commit a crime. Deputy Police Chief Helena Rafferty said police had originally responded to the Rubin Court housing complex for a disturbance call and later returned after the neighbor called to report the break-in.

DPW conducting cross connection surveys

The Water Division of the Canton Public Works Department will be conducting cross connection control surveys of all non-residential water customers. The town is required to administer these surveys to all commercial, industrial and institutional facilities supplied by the public water system. According to the DPW, the purpose of these surveys is to identify any and all cross connections and make sure that they are fitted with the proper backflow device to protect public health and safety.

The DPW has contracted with Water Safety Services, Inc., a privately held corporation that was established in 1994 for the sole purpose of assisting cities and towns in the implementation of the Massachusetts Drinking Water Regulations and the Cross Connection Control Program. The contact person at Water Safety Services, Inc. is Joe Heitz and he can be reached at 781-932-8787.

Plumbing cross connections are defined as actual or potential connections between a potable and non-potable water supply that may contribute to the degradation of the quality of water inside a home or business. An unprotected or inadequately protected cross connection in the home or business could contaminate the drinking water supply not only in that building but also in neighboring homes or businesses. Backflows due to cross-connections are serious plumbing problems and can cause sickness and even death.
