Thank you Canton; goodbye Bulldogs
By GuestTo the Editor:
Tonight, I will attend my last meeting as a proud member of the Canton School Committee.
To that end, I give my heart-felt thanks to all the citizens of Canton who saw fit to first elect me to the committee in 2002, and for the many terms and years that have followed. I am truly humbled that you have entrusted me to serve alongside so many talented committee members, administrators, support staff and, of course, teachers, who have all shown great and selfless dedication to all our students.
While each of these years has presented their own challenges, fortunately, our students have enjoyed far more periods of progress and accomplishment than not. Indeed, as I look back at some of the School Committee’s key initiatives, I must acknowledge that our district’s extraordinary improvements would not have been possible without the sustained support of our town’s residents. Moreover, the Board of Selectmen, Finance, Capital Planning, and Building Renovation committees, plus public safety and numerous parent groups, boosters, and our wonderfully supportive business community, have each been critical to our schools’ many and varied successes.
Of course, it is my fervent hope that this high level of collaboration remains the hallmark of how our beloved town and schools continue to stand apart from other communities. As I have often said at teacher orientations and in welcoming new staff to Canton: “You have arrived at a very special place.”
On a more personal note, my departure from the committee coincides with the upcoming graduation of my son from Canton High School. The fourth (and last!) of my children to have spent his entire school-life in Canton. I’d like to extend a special thanks to their many exceptional teachers. Please know that I will always be grateful for the critical role you have played in their academic growth, and in their social development, too. In ways both measurable and nuanced, my family owes so very much to each of you — and so you have my everlasting appreciation, thanks, and love.
Though I have never been an “official” Bulldog myself, I will nonetheless deeply miss being a part of this wonderful school community and town — both will always be on my mind and in my heart.
Gratefully,
John Bonnanzio
