Neighbors of High St. accident victim thank responders

By

Dear Editor:

On Saturday, February 10, my family experienced a senseless, tragic accident that resulted in the death of our neighbor and friend Ralph Hawkins. Due to the nature of the accident and contingent factors involved, the investigation took up most of the day. The state police were very thorough, respectful, and conscientious in their investigation.

Unfortunately, High Street has become a speedway for those who wish to avoid the center of Canton going either towards Norwood or Sharon. Many of these motorists ignore the posted 25-miles-per-hour speed limit on a street populated by many young children and older adults. This is an issue that needs to be addressed in the near future.

The purpose of this letter is to thank and acknowledge the first and second responders to this unfortunate event.

As second responders, the Canton Department of Public Works came to our address the Monday following the accident and removed the tree that was strewn across three neighboring yards. Thank you for cleaning the debris from the children’s school bus stop before they returned home from school. It was a very traumatic reminder of the loss of their friend Ralph on that Monday morning when they were not able to board the bus there. Ralph left each morning to drive Maggie to work and beeped and waved to all of them.

To the first responders, the efficiency and careful, expert professionalism of the Fire Department paramedics, ambulance personnel, and firefighters needs to be noted. Having been in their midst as they worked the scene is awe-inspiring and we are forever grateful.

Finally, in this area where it has become the norm to paint police across this country as bullies and uncaring to their communities, we wish to especially thank you, the Canton Police Department, for your courtesy, professionalism, and compassion to our neighbors and families. It felt like every officer on the force was there addressing the situation, yet your empathy for our needs and feelings was strongly noted and appreciated by all of us affected.

It makes us proud to be residents of Canton, Mass.

Thank you,

Michael Doyle and family
