Historical walking tours set for Memorial Day weekend
By Canton CitizenCanton’s rich history will be on display throughout Memorial Day weekend as the Canton Historical Society will lead guided tours of the Paul Revere Heritage Site as well as the Canton Viaduct. The tours are a fundraising effort by the society to assist in the creation of the Paul Revere Heritage Corporation. The soon-to-be established nonprofit organization will bid to create a museum and management group to oversee the heritage site.
Paul Revere Heritage Site: Saturday to Monday throughout the weekend
Come and visit the Paul Revere Heritage Site — a work in progress — as we take you back in time with a sneak peek at the future on a guided tour of the nine-acre site.
This property has been witness to history for more than 300 years. From 1717 through to today, history unfolds and we learn about the role that this site played in the American Revolution, the birthplace of the U.S. copper industry, and its pivotal part of the American Civil War. This is one of the region’s most important industrial sites, and soon to be the home of a marvelous park, museum and destination restaurant.
Canton Viaduct: Sunday, May 27, at 4 p.m.
Built in 1834, the Canton Viaduct is Canton’s most iconic historic structure. Federally recognized as a National Historic Site and one of the oldest stone arch bridges still in use today, the Viaduct has a remarkable story to tell.
The Viaduct represents a fantastic connection among design, architecture, and the marvel of civil engineering. This walking tour will bring to life the men who conceived of the idea of spanning the Neponset River with a bridge that has lasted for more than 180 years. Today’s modern technology has transformed the bridge into a vital structure along the Northeast corridor from Boston to New York.
Both tours will be a one-hour guided tour led by local historian and Citizen columnist George Comeau. The tours are scheduled rain or shine — refunds are available up to one day in advance of the tour. All proceeds from the sale of tickets will be used to support the founding of the Paul Revere Heritage Corporation. Tickets are $10 (plus a small processing fee) and can be purchased online at www.cantonhistorical.org.
