Rousseau, Smith lead track teams to 1st wins
By Mike BergerWith continued individual improvement and point scoring in almost every event, both CHS outdoor track teams were victorious over Foxboro in an away meet last week. The girls team edged the Warriors 70-66 while the boys won convincingly 90-66.
Freshman Maddie Rousseau led the girls team with 18 points, including first-place finishes in the 100m, 200m (state-qualifying time), and long jump along with a second-place finish in the triple jump.
For the boys, senior Cordel Smith once again led the way as he took first in the 200m, high jump and long jump while finishing third in the 100m.
Fellow senior Marquise Montes also had a big day for the Bulldogs with wins in the 100m, triple jump, and as part of the 4×100 relay along with Gersom Rivera, Junior Sainvil and Lucca Terenzio. Senior Riley McDonnell added a win in the 400m and took second in the high jump while senior Colin Messinger won the two-mile and placed second in the mile with a personal-best time of 4:46.7. Shane Graham also picked up a win in the 400m and anchored the winning 4×400 relay behind Gerry Sullivan, Steven Brady, and Chris Milne.
Other point scorers for the boys included John Guenthner, 2nd, 400 hurdles and 110 hurdles; Sainvil, 2nd, 200m and long jump; Rivera, 2nd, 100m; Gerry Sullivan, 2nd, 800m; Brady, 3rd, 400m; Matt Floyd, 3rd, 400 hurdles; and Chris Milne, 3rd, 800m.
The Bulldogs also had excellent results in the field events with second-place finishes from Justin Rodriguez in the javelin, Brady in the triple jump, and Tommy Pulcini in the discus, and third-place finishes from Pulcini in the shot put, Jude Albert in the discus, and Dan Floyd in the javelin.
In the girls’ competition, other standout performers besides Rousseau included fellow freshman Olivia Rodman, who won the 400m and triple jump and took second in the 800m and 400 hurdles; junior Sarah Collins, who placed first in the 400 hurdles and 800m; and sophomore Bronwyn Mahoney, who won both the discus and shot put.
The 4×100 relay also placed first behind Rebecca Connerney, Rosana Cho, Jenna Hamrock, and Claire Belisle.
Other point scorers for the lady Bulldogs included Leah Murphy, who took second in the 100 and third in the 200; Chloe Pennacchio, who placed third in the mile and two-mile; and Belisle, who placed second in the 100 hurdles and third in the triple jump — both with personal-best marks.
