Temple congregation announces new name
By Canton CitizenB’nai Tikvah is the new name of a vibrant Jewish community with its home in Canton. Located in the former Temple Beth Abraham building at 1301 Washington Street, B’nai Tikvah is the name of the congregation formed by the recent merger of Temple Beth Abraham and Temple Beth Am of Randolph.
B’nai Tikvah, which means Children of Hope, considers itself a South Area Jewish Congregation and embraces families who live in many surrounding communities, including Randolph, Stoughton, Sharon, Mansfield, Foxboro, Braintree and Norwood.
“Our name represents the hope for the future of our congregation and the Jewish community south of Boston,” stated Andrew Azer, B’nai Tikvah president. “Working together, we can grow and expand our reach to secure our home for generations to come.”
Debrah Gladstone, who chaired the Naming Committee, emphasized that B’nai Tikvah focuses both on the present and the future. The present goal is for the members of the two former congregations to merge their histories and customs to create a strong congregation. “As for the future,” Gladstone said, “the possibilities are only limited by our openness to explore, to reach out to the unaffiliated and/or underserved while we solidify our base of existing congregants.”
She noted that a Jewish congregation traditionally serves three purposes: as a house of worship, a learning center, and a gathering place.
“As B’nai Tikvah, our hope is to energize and grow all three aspects, nourishing the South Area Jewish Community, creating a diverse yet unified congregation whose members will find a special place for themselves and their families within our community,” Gladstone said. “As Children of Hope, we look forward to a bright future that will be sustainable and exciting for many years to come.”
B’nai Tikvah offers a range of educational programs for all ages and social action programming in addition to religious services.
