Update: With an 11-10 comeback victory over No. 3 Sandwich Thursday night, the CHS boys lacrosse team kept its championship dreams alive and will now move on to play No. 2 Scituate in the Division 2 south semifinals on Tuesday, June 12. The sixth-seeded Bulldogs (11-7) already have a win against the Sailors this season after beating them in overtime back on May 14. The winner of Tuesday’s rematch will advance to the south sectional championship game to face either No. 1 Falmouth or No. 5 Oliver-Ames.

It’s on to the Division 2 south sectional quarterfinals for the CHS boys lacrosse team after the Bulldogs took care of business at home Tuesday night against 11th seeded Pembroke.

Canton, with a 9-7 regular season record, drew the sixth seed in the 16-team bracket and will now head to the Cape to take on the No. 3 Sandwich Blue Knights tonight at 5 p.m. The winner of the ‘elite eight’ matchup would then advance to the sectional semifinals where they would face either No. 2 Scituate or the winner of yesterday’s Bristol-Plymouth/Dartmouth matchup.

In their playoff opener against Pembroke, the Bulldogs was again proved to be the slightly superior team as they improved to 2-0 against the Titans this season with another close victory — this time by a final score of 8-7. They also beat Pembroke 8-6 in a road contest back on April 23.

In the rematch, Canton senior captain Charlie O’Connor got things going for the Bulldogs with a goal off the opening faceoff just seconds into the game. O’Connor added another one before the half to put the hosts up 4-2, but the Titans came roaring back in the third period and briefly took the lead at 6-5 before senior Kevin Albert answered with a goal late in the period to even the score at 6-6.

Albert added another goal in the fourth to put the Bulldogs ahead by one, but Pembroke responded just minutes later to tie the game at 7-7. Then, with around seven minutes remaining in regulation, Albert found junior Griffin Roach in front for the eventual game-winning score.

Pembroke had several chances to tie it in the final minutes of the game, but they could not get anything past sophomore goalie Jack Connolly, who was sensational down the stretch when the team needed him most.

In addition to O’Connor’s early spark and Albert and Roach’s late-game heroics, junior Mike Shaw had a big game with a pair of goals and one assist while sophomore Chris Lavoie also had a goal for the Bulldogs. The Canton defensemen also had a big hand in the victory, led by junior Brendan Albert and senior Gabe Galeotos.
