Military sashes should be worn proudly at graduation
By Canton CitizenDear Editor:
On June 12 at the Blue Hills Regional graduation ceremony, students who are enlisting in the military have been told that they are allowed to wear their military sashes but that they have to wear them under their graduation robes until after the graduation ceremony is over.
These are students who are proud to be Americans, proud of the military that defends our country, and proud of their decision to enlist to serve our country. These are smart, articulate, and dedicated young people who had other opportunities to pursue after high school graduation. They were accepted to colleges or offered jobs, but they chose to put those plans on hold and enter the military to serve and protect all of us. Now they are being told to hide that commitment under a graduation robe.
I understand that this is a school policy, but the same school that just this fall celebrated and highly publicized the military career of Scott Tingle, an astronaut and BHR graduate, is now asking these students to hide their own military commitments. Other local schools including Canton High School either allow the wearing of the military sash or they acknowledge students enlisting in the military during the graduation ceremony.
As a Canton parent of one of these students enlisting in the military, I am asking anyone who agrees that this policy should be changed to please support them by signing their petition, which can be accessed at www.change.org by searching “blue hills military sashes” and contacting Canton’s BHR School Committee member Aidan Maguire at amaguire@bluehills.org.
Thank you,
Melissa Healey
