BOS approves ‘test run’ alcohol license for Ice House
By Mike BergerIn a 3-2 vote on Tuesday night, the Canton Board of Selectmen approved a three-day license for the Canton Ice House to serve beer and wine in a confined room during a youth hockey tournament July 12-14.
The Ice House had originally applied for several two- and three-day licenses from July 12 to September 2 for various youth and international ice hockey tournaments. Selectmen agreed to the single license as a test run and reserve the right to hold a revocation hearing if any problems arise.
The Ice House offered many security stipulations, including serving in a confined room accessible to adults only; daily serving hours of 1-9 p.m.; a two-drink maximum; staffing that includes a TIP certified bartender, a staff member to monitor security and a food service director; and a late addition of hiring a four-hour police detail each day, pending officer availability.
Selectman John Connolly and BOS Chairman Mark Porter sided with Police Chief Ken Berkowitz and Fire Chief Charles Doody, who agreed that alcohol and youth hockey do not mix well. Selectmen Kevin Feeney, Tom Theodore and Chris Connolly voted for the July 12-14 license approval in the spirit of fairness and to create a level playing field in light of prior single-event license approvals issued by the board.
Feeney offered the compromise of evaluating the test run at the next selectmen’s meeting on July 17.
Berkowitz and Doody said they appreciate the work of the Ice House owners, who are all Canton residents, but they in good conscience could not support an alcohol license at a youth hockey facility …
