No-hitter highlights mixed week for Legion Post 24
By Canton CitizenThe Canton American Legion Post 24 baseball team remains locked in a battle for District 6 East supremacy entering the home stretch of the regular season.
As of last night, the team stood at 10-3-1 overall — just two standings points behind Quincy and three points ahead of perennially dangerous Braintree.
Canton was scheduled to play a home-and-home series with Braintree on Wednesday and Thursday and will then wrap up the regular season with away games against Cohasset on Friday and Dedham on Sunday, July 15. The top four teams in the division will qualify for the District 6 playoffs, which get underway on Friday, July 20.
In action last week, Canton played twice and earned a 1-1 split, losing to first-place Quincy 7-4 before bouncing back with a dominant road win over Holbrook.
Sharon’s Max Tarlin led the way in the victory over Holbrook, throwing a no-hitter through five innings in a game that was called early due to the league’s 10-run slaughter rule. It marked the first time that a Post 24 pitcher has thrown a no-hitter since Andrew Poliferno — now head coach of the Canton A’s — threw one back in 2007.
Canton also had many offensive highlights in the 12-0 win, including a two-run, inside the park home run by Aidan Arnold and a near field-clearing home run by Steve Walker that was ruled a ground-rule double. Ruben Gonzalez and Andrew Bryant added three RBIs apiece while Canton High’s Nate Quan drove in two.
Last Thursday’s home contest against Quincy had a playoff feel to it, but it was not Canton’s best game, according to head coach Greg Lyons. “We came out flat,” he said. “The second half of the game we played more like ourselves. Quincy is a good team and we are going to have to play our best to beat them.”
Walker paced the Canton offense with two RBIs while Bryant and Arnold each had one. Post 24 had several chances to get back in the game but struggled to come up with timely hits as the late rally fell short.
