Playing without injured No. 1 golfer Chris Lavoie, the CHS varsity golf team managed to stay competitive in both matches last week and came away with a hard-earned split on the road, falling by one stroke to King Philip before edging Foxboro a day later on a sixth-card tiebreaker.

Overall, the Bulldogs are off to a strong start at 4-1 overall, good for first place in the Hockomock Davenport Division.

In the KP match last Thursday at Wentworth Hills Country Club, freshman Mike Leonetti was the co-medalist with a team-low score of 39. “Mike played great on a course he has never played before,” said head coach Mike Barucci. “He tied [a KP player] for the best score of the match.”

Senior Mike Gobbi and sophomore Thomas Singleton were next for Canton with identical 43 scores, followed by senior captain Ryan Nolte with a 44.

The following day at Foxboro Country Club, the Bulldogs edged the Warriors 270-273 in a match that required two additional cards to break the tie. “Foxboro Country Club is a very tough course,” acknowledged Barucci. “We had some high scores, but overall everyone did well and we were able to win on a card off by three strokes.”

Senior captain Tommy Dimock was the match medalist with a low score of 40. He was followed by Singleton (45), Gobbi (46), Leonetti (46), freshman Andrew Middleton (46), and freshman Conor Hunter (47).

“This was a big Davenport Division win for us,” said Barucci. “The course always plays tough and the higher scores showed it, but we have a strong, deep lineup, which helped us come away with a very close win. We had some freshmen step in and really help us win, including Conor Hunter, who played in his first match and was the sixth score that won us the match.”

The Bulldogs were due to play two more away matches this week — Wednesday versus Stoughton at Easton Country Club and tomorrow at Franklin. After that, the schedule shifts in Canton’s favor as they close out the regular season playing six of their final seven matches at Blue Hill Country Club.
