Canton Fall Classic road race celebrates 30th year
By Canton CitizenRace organizers look forward to a glorious race day on Sunday, October 28, to mark the 30th anniversary of Canton’s largest road race. The Canton Fall Classic has long been not only a great Canton community event, but also an outstanding event for surrounding communities.
This past year, Stoughton suffered an unimaginable loss when four high school students died in a tragic car accident. All four of those students were members of the Stoughton High track team, and the team has enjoyed a strong connection with the Canton Fall Classic for almost 20 years. Race director Harvey Blonder coached cross country and track for 14 years at SHS and literally hundreds of Stoughton team members have served in various support roles on race day. This year, to honor the memory of the four students and the community at large, the Fall Classic has borrowed the Stoughton colors and will be donating a portion of the proceeds to the track team.
The race prides itself on its attraction to all generations. There is a fun run for the young folks who are just getting their first taste of racing. The senior walk has proven to be a great hit and has attracted many participants who are approaching the century mark. And the 5k and 10k races allow for runners to experience different challenge levels. Both courses feature the town’s beautiful autumn landscape and feature rolling hills throughout.
For those first timers, try to gauge what pace you may be able to run for the distance you are planning on. You can do this by running a timed mile on the track or a GPS mile on a flat road. You will get an idea of what pace you feel you can maintain on race day. You can’t simulate the adrenaline you get from competition so you’ll have that on race day. Covering the distance in training will help you as well. Don’t be afraid to test yourself. If it’s your first attempt, you get a PR (personal record) just for finishing!
Age group winners receive merchandise prizes and post race features a lively vendor village along with refreshments. Long-sleeve performance t-shirts are guaranteed to all pre-entries. To register for this year’s race, go to www.cantonfallclassic.com.
