Hayes, Elizabeth L.

Elizabeth L. “Betti” Hayes (Smith), 68, of Canton, passed away unexpectedly at home October 4 due to complications from diabetes.

Born in Boston, she graduated from Stoughton High School, Class of 1968. She worked for Quincy College for many years as the secretary to the dean and later as a secretary for the Mass. Hospital School in Canton before retiring. She was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post #24 in Canton and the Norwood VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post #2452. She loved quilting and knitting and was a member of the Quilters Guild in Walpole.

Beloved wife of William S. Mother of Michael E. Hayes and his wife, Toni, of Montana and Shannon E. Hayes and her boyfriend, John D. Murphy, of Norwood. Sister of Allen Smith and his wife, Margaret, of Halifax, Edward Smith and his wife, Debbie, of Taunton, and the late Richard Smith. Grandmother of Brendan and Katie Hayes and Eric Hamlin.

Services are private for the family and burial will be at the VA National Cemetery in Bourne. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post #24, 950 Washington St., Canton, MA 02021, or to the Norwood VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post #2452, 193 Dean St., Norwood, MA 02062, or to the Boston Children’s Autism Spectrum Center, 300 Longwood Ave., Boston, MA 02115.
