CHS field hockey team rebounds after key division loss
By Jay TurnerAfter knocking off rival Foxboro in impressive fashion a few weeks prior, the CHS field hockey team traveled to Forekicks in Taunton last week for a highly anticipated rematch and a game that was likely to determine this year’s Davenport Division winner.
Unfortunately for the Bulldogs and their league title hopes, it just wasn’t their day as the team fell 2-0 following a performance that head coach Chrissy O’Connor described afterwards as “flat.”
“[Foxboro] always gives us a good game and we always have fun playing them,” said O’Connor. “I just think that they came ready to play and we did not. We were just kind of flat. We were in the right spots at the right times; we just had a lot of fouls and a lot of missed opportunities.”
O’Connor also lamented missed opportunities in an earlier 1-0 win over Oliver Ames; however, the team seemed to bounce back over the weekend with a strong performance in a 2-2 draw with a tough Norwood team, followed by a blowout win on the road against Stoughton on Monday.
In the Norwood game, played on Saturday at home, the Bulldogs went up 2-0 behind a pair of goals from senior captain Maggie Malloy, but the Mustangs battled back in the second half, eventually tying the game with a minute and a half left.
Despite the late Norwood comeback, O’Connor was pleased with her team’s performance in the draw. “I thought they rallied from playing flat against Foxboro and really played well,” she said. “The passing game was much better, the movement to the ball, our defense was much better. There were a few missed offensive opportunities, but we did score twice and overall played a much better game.”
The offense appeared to be clicking in Monday’s game at Stoughton as the Bulldogs rolled to a 6-1 win — its 10th of the season. Malloy added to her team lead with two more goals while freshman Erin Lane notched her first career varsity goal. Also scoring in the win for Canton were Maria Femia, Kaitlyn Goyetch, and Veronika Sliz.
The Bulldogs now have three games remaining following yesterday’s contest with Sharon. The team has already locked up a playoff spot at 10-3-1 and has likely solidified its second-place position in the standings, sitting three points behind division leader Foxboro and well ahead of third-place North Attleboro. Canton will face the Rocketeers on Monday before closing out the regular season with games against Milford and Attleboro next Wednesday and Thursday.
