CHS golfer captures Division 2 south individual crown
By Mike BergerCHS junior Chris Lavoie finished in a tie atop the leaderboard and earned co-medalist honors at the Division 2 south sectional golf championships held Monday at Easton Country Club. The Bulldog captain posted a match-low score of 76 over 18 holes and punched his ticket to the state finals, which get underway next Tuesday, October 30, at Marshfield Country Club.
“Chris played extremely well in tough and cold conditions,” said head coach Mike Barucci. “He did not get off to a great start but he was able to turn it around on his back nine. He had five birdies, including a birdie on his last hole to finish tied for first. He was confident in all aspects of his game coming into the tournament and it really showed on the course as he was able to battle through tough conditions and a tough start.”
Overall, Canton finished 10th out of 13 teams in the tournament, which counted each team’s four best scores. Besides Lavoie’s 76, Canton’s other top scorers were freshman Mike Leonetti (84), sophomore Thomas Singleton (88), and freshman Conor Hunter (90).
“As a team we had some high scores but were only a few strokes behind most of the teams ahead of us,” Barucci said. “It was a great experience for the younger kids on the team.”
Also participating in the tournament for Canton were seniors Tommy Dimock and Mike Gobbi.
In other recent action, the Bulldogs wrapped up the regular season with two more league wins against Milford and Stoughton to finish at 11-2 overall. The team also hosted this year’s Hockomock League Championship at Blue Hill Country Club, but ultimately came up short in their bid for a third consecutive league tournament title, placing sixth out of 12 teams with a score of 264. Lavoie and Dimock tied for the team low with an 85, followed by Singleton at 94. Mansfield finished as the champion with a score of 240, followed by Oliver Ames, Franklin, Foxboro and North Attleboro.
Two days earlier against Milford, CHS prevailed 158-163 behind a stellar performance from Dimock, who had the best round of his career with a 1-under 33, including an eagle on the par-4 third hole. “It is an incredible score and a great way to end his high school golf career on his home course,” said Barucci. Singleton shot a 38, followed by Gobbi with a 43 and Leonetti with a 44.
In their final match against Stoughton, played last Wednesday at Easton CC, the Bulldogs finished strong with a 165-175 win, clinching their second consecutive Davenport Division title in the process. “This is a huge accomplishment for such a young team with many of the starters not having played in matches coming into this season,” said Barucci.
The match was shortened by rain, but both teams had two groups finish to make the result count. Dimock led the way for Canton with a 37, followed by Lavoie (41), Gobbi (43), and Ryan Nolte (44).
