The official name for the residential component of the old Plymouth Rubber development is Copperwood Condominiums. According to a recent story in the Canton Citizen, the new builders and architects are Richard Vassa of Vassa Real Estate Company and Lloyd Geisinger of Thorndike Development. Construction of the residential units could begin by March 2019.
The Army Corps of Engineers has approved the bridge connection to Neponset Street from inside the old Plymouth Rubber construction site. The developer is still awaiting approval from the state Department of Environmental Protection.
Canton Holdings LLC, which is overseeing the redevelopment of the former Plymouth Rubber factory site with Bernie Plante as the company’s executive at the site, said they will first develop age-restricted (over 55) apartments with the units to be completed by June 2020. Marketing and sales will begin around December 1, 2018.
There are 3,290 students enrolled in the Canton school system. The only school reporting an increase in enrollment this year was the Hansen Elementary School, which showed a gain of nine students.
According to a recent story in the Patriot Ledger, the U.S. Attorney’s office for the District of Massachusetts has accused a Canton woman of embezzling more than $1.3 million from a Boston nonprofit agency. The woman faces charges of wire fraud, bank fraud, and aggravated identity theft.
The Canton High School football team recently beat Davenport Division rival Foxboro 43-20 to end a 28-year losing streak against the Warriors. CHS also earned a share of the division championship — their first Hockomock crown since 1990. They have since gone on to beat Hanover in the opening round of the MIAA playoffs and will face Falmouth tomorrow night at Falmouth High School. Go Bulldogs!
Dunkin’ Donuts, the 68-year-old chain headquartered here in Canton, is dropping the “donuts” from its name as of January 2019. Coffee and sandwiches have become increasingly important to Dunkin’, which has more than 12,500 stores.
Arby’s, which acquired the Buffalo Wild Wings chain this year, recently bought the Sonic Drive-In hamburger chain. Sonic has 3,600 restaurants, including one in Stoughton on Route 138.
New York Yankees outfielder and former Red Sox player Jacoby Ellsbury was paid over $21 million this past year, and he didn’t play a single game. David Wright of the Mets and Troy Tulowitzki of the Blue Jays were also paid $20 million for the season despite playing a combined four innings (all by Wright in a ceremonial final appearance).
Flashing pedestrian lights are being installed at Washington and Sassamon streets, Washington Street at Newell Hagan Court, Washington Street at High Street, Chapman Street at Wattles, and Chapman Street at Beaumont Street.
A Canton Senior Center trip is scheduled for Tuesday, December 4, to the Danversport Yacht Club to see The Sicilian Tenors: Christmas Amore Show. The cost is $92 per person and includes transportation, lunch, the show, taxes, and gratuity. Selectmen recently appointed Jason Becker and Austin McGonagle as new Canton firefighters.
Democratic Congressman Bill Keating, 65, who served for 22 years in the state legislature and 12 years as Norfolk district attorney, is running for a fifth term in Congress. Keating is being challenged by Republican Peter Tedeschi.
By the way, Election Day is Tuesday, November 6.
With Veterans Day approaching, Canton resident and Community Club of Canton member Jill Hayes is asking for your donations for our military veterans. Essential clothing items include winter coats, jackets, sweaters, socks, shoes, sneakers, slippers, and underwear. Also needed are toiletries and personal items such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, reading glasses, Q-tips, disposable razors, and shaving cream. Gift certificates in any amount to Shaw’s, Stop & Shop, and Big Y as well as CVS, Rite-Aid, and Walgreens are also accepted and appreciated. Please note that all items, including clothing, are required to be new, unused, and in original packaging. Donations will be accepted at the Canton Public Library and other locations throughout town on Thursday, November 8, between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
The Canton Council on Aging will hold its annual Christmas and Hanukkah party on Tuesday, December 11, starting at noon at Brookmeadow Country Club.
A legal clinic is held every other month at the Canton Senior Center. The next clinic is scheduled for Friday, November 9. You must make an appointment in advance to see the attorney by calling the Council on Aging at 781-828-1323.
