The Canton Citizen is pleased to announce its 2018 fall all-star selections. The full list, featuring 25 CHS athletes from eight sports, appears in this week’s print edition as part of the Citizen’s annual fall sports wrap-up.

Boys MVP

Brendan Albert (Football)

A senior captain and two-time All-Hockomock selection, Albert was head coach Dave Bohane’s choice for Davenport Division MVP due to his all-around impact on defense, offense and special teams. “Brendan was one of the most dominant, most dynamic players in the league,” Bohane said. “His biggest impacts came in the biggest games.” Overall this season, Albert recorded 71 tackles, including eight for a loss, 10 sacks, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. He also blocked two extra points and a field goal and was a key part of a dominant running game as both a blocker and a part-time rusher. Bohane said Albert was a great player to coach and a role model for his teammates. “He led by example and respect,” he said.

Girls MVP

Nicole Brown (Volleyball)

A two-year captain and an exceptional all-around athlete, Brown was the backbone of the CHS volleyball team and was the driving force behind the lady Bulldogs’ run to the Division 2 central sectional finals. In addition to collecting nearly 450 assists as the team’s starting setter, she also tallied 245 digs, 96 kills, and 35 aces while serving with 94 percent accuracy. “She is a talented athlete with a work ethic beyond compare, a supportive and encouraging teammate, and a leader among her peers,” said head coach Pat Cawley. “She plays her position with skill, confidence and poise and is the fastest athlete I’ve coached in my 18 years at Canton High School. Without Nicole on the court, we would not have been in the sectional final.”

Football

Johnny Hagan

A junior captain and All-Hockomock selection, Hagan has developed into one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the Hockomock and was instrumental in the Bulldogs’ resurgence this season. An excellent decision maker with impressive athleticism, Hagan threw for 747 passing yards and 11 touchdowns while also racking up 883 yards and six scores on the ground. “This guy is a great type of leader and a fierce competitor,” said head coach Dave Bohane. “He has full command of the offense. He has earned my trust and respect and I value his opinion.”

Brian Campagna

A senior captain and league all-star, Campagna proved to be a force on both the offensive and defensive lines. “Brian is a great example of ‘Gang Green’ defense; he played and pursued to the whistle,” said Coach Bohane. “He was the leader of a young, inexperienced offensive line and he had a lot of responsibility.” On defense, he recorded 32 tackles, two sacks, and recovered a fumble.

Ben Seaman

Another senior captain and all-league selection, Seaman first made a name for himself as one of the few bright spots in a Thanksgiving Day loss to Stoughton two years ago, and since then he has developed into one of the top linebackers in the league. He was all over the field this year, finishing with 46 tackles, including seven for a loss, nine sacks, and one forced fumble. He also assisted some on offense as a situational blocker. “Ben is a good athlete, strong and fast,” said Coach Bohane. “He worked his skills to make himself the top of his position.”

Ryan Colby

One of the Bulldogs’ unsung heroes, Colby quietly exceled at cornerback — a difficult position — and often had to cover the opponent’s best receiver. He did his job unselfishly and was recognized as an all-league honorable mention while being honored by his coaches and teammates as the Ricky Shannon Award recipient. On the field, he was an excellent tackler and his interception and return was a key element in the win over Foxboro. “It was not always easy for him,” said Coach Bohane. “This year he had a dynamic year.”

Kyle Fitzgerald

One of the team’s big breakout stars, Fitzgerald excelled as a runner and returner, compiling nearly 1,000 yards of total offense while racking up 15 touchdowns. He also came up huge during the Bulldogs’ playoff run, highlighted by a monster, four-touchdown game against top-seeded Falmouth. In addition to his offensive production, Fitzgerald returned kickoffs and punts and also excelled on defense as a free safety. “Kyle loves to compete; he has a lot of fun out there and I am totally excited about his future next year,” said Coach Bohane.

Volleyball

Erin Devine

A senior captain and All-Hockomock selection, Devine raised her game to new heights this season in the role of middle blocker, finishing atop the league leaderboard with 89 blocks. She also placed second on the team in kills and earned praise from her coaches for her positive attitude and hustle. “She was always working hard to make things happen, never giving up, and willing to try new things,” said head coach Pat Cawley. “She was the start of our defense, attempting to block every ball coming our way. Erin reached levels this season way beyond expectations!”

Megan McDonough

A senior captain and league all-star at libero, McDonough was the anchor of a stingy Bulldog defense and finished among the league leaders with 301 digs. She was also a strong serve receiver, a precision passer, and an aggressive server (93 percent accuracy, 35 aces). “Her calm demeanor and supportive nature on the court helped settle her teammates in stressful situations,” said Coach Cawley. “Without her selfless play and hard work this year, we would not have enjoyed such a successful season.”

Taylor Harris

A junior outside hitter and one of the program’s rising stars, Harris was one of only a handful of Canton players who rarely came off the court this season. She led the team with 205 kills and was a force in serve receive. Her defense and serve steadily improved throughout the season and she finished among the leaders in digs and aces. “Taylor’s play in the state tournament was amazing all-around and one of the main reasons we made it to the sectional finals,” said Cawley. “The best news is Taylor is back for another season …
