New-look girls basketball team off to strong start
By Mike BergerWith promising freshmen Kiara Cerruti and Fay and Sydney Gallery displaying a nice shooting touch and making immediate contributions, the CHS girls basketball lineup has a new dimension to go along with an outstanding backcourt in seniors Julia Hamilton and Maggie Connolly.
So far through two games, the results have been encouraging as the lady Bulldogs combined for 114 points against two strong opponents in Attleboro and Foxboro. Canton also had its defense going against Attleboro in a 53-39 home win but struggled to contain the Warriors and dropped the second game on the road 86-61.
Against Attleboro, Cerruti had a team-high 20 points and Fay Gallery hit for 16 as the two rookies combined for seven three pointers.
Canton raced out to an 11-1 lead after the first five minutes and never trailed in the game. Attleboro managed to cut the deficit to four late in the third quarter, but a three pointer by Fay Gallery and a jumper by Hamilton brought the lead back up to nine with seven minutes remaining in the game.
After the game, head coach Jim Choquette acknowledged there is still a lot of room for improvement but he sees great potential with his younger players working with the veterans. He said Cerruti and the Gallery sisters bring speed and shooting to a new transition offense. He also saw the defensive potential with the Bulldogs holding a good Attleboro team to just 39 points.
Canton was less successful on that end of the floor against Foxboro as they had problems containing Katelyn Mollica, who finished with a game-high 31 points. Connolly had quite a game for herself too, scoring a career-high 22 points while recording seven steals.
Canton trailed 20-16 at the end of the first quarter and quickly cut the deficit to two in the opening minute of the second on a Hamilton pass to Erin Devine for a layup. But that was the closest they would get as the Warriors outscored Canton 24-11 for the rest of the half. The Bulldogs continued to battle and had a strong fourth quarter but Foxboro had too much of a lead to overcome.
Besides Connolly’s 22 points, Cerruti had 10 points and Fay and Sydney Gallery each scored nine as Canton fell to 1-1 on the season.
