Although winless in four dual meets this season, the Canton High boys indoor track team made quite an impression at last weekend’s MSTCA Division 4 State Relay Meet, placing first in two events en route to a fourth place finish overall.

The CHS girls team also turned in some impressive performances on Saturday and this should bode well for both teams when they see many of the same competitors at the Division 4 Championships in February.

“We had a great night at the D4 relays,” said head coach Anna Amico. “All of our students competed hard and posted many personal bests. Every relay was very competitive. Our boys 4×200 and long jump relays led the way with championship wins. It is the second year in a row that the Canton boys 4×200 relay was meet champions.”

This year’s winning 4×200 relay team posted a season-best time of 1:36.62 behind the strong running of Jonathan Chery, Cam Sanchez, Junior Sainvil, and Deyontai Dennis. Sainvil and Dennis were also part of the winning long jump relay team along with Nathan Quan.

In the boys 4×50 relay, a team of Sanchez, Quan, Chery and Sainvil took 10th place overall while setting a new school record with a time of 23.5 seconds.

The 4×400 relay finished 11th overall and bested their previous season-best mark by nine seconds to finish in 3:47.88 behind Mike Mazzola, Zach Goldstein, James Vo and Dennis.

The Canton boys also took 15th in the 4×800 relay behind Chris Rota, Jack Hernon, Vo and Mazzola and 19th in the sprint medley relay with a team of Kyle Downing, Andy Butler, Quan, and Goldstein.

In the girls’ competition, Canton’s top finisher was the shot put relay, which placed 16th behind Bronwyn Mahoney, Chloe Pennacchio and Liz Bickett.

The girls 4×200 relay team of Mahoney, Rebecca Connerney, Gabby Herivaux and Morgan Quinn produced a season-best time of 1:59.61, and the 4×50 sprint relay finished 28th in 27.58 seconds behind Connerney, Herivaux, Kristina Powers and Kayla Camille.

Other finishers for the girls included the 4×800 team of Kayla Wong, Quinn, Lauren Sullivan and Pennacchio, which placed 21st in 11:20.97, and the sprint medley team of Erika Boone, Powers, Wong and Rosana Cho, which finished 24th in 5:07.81.
