News Notes: CPD detective nabs suspected car burglar

A 17-year-old juvenile is facing criminal charges for allegedly breaking into a motor vehicle in the Shaw’s parking lot on the afternoon of Friday, January 25. Deputy Police Chief Helena Rafferty said the incident was witnessed by Detective Rob Quirk, who had been patrolling the area after receiving a report of a car break in the parking lot a few hours prior. The suspect will be charged with two counts of breaking into a motor vehicle in the daytime and larceny under $1,200.

Rain, winds cause downed wires

A telephone pole brought down by high winds and rain resulted in the closure of Spring Lane for several hours during the afternoon on Thursday, January 24. Police also received calls that day for downed wires on Turnpike Street and Morton Circle. Road hazards were also reported on Chapman Street, York Street and Helen Drive, and Green Lodge and Elm streets.

In other news, Canton firefighters responded to a mutual aid request from the Sharon Fire Department for a two-alarm fire on Norwood Street in Sharon on Friday, January 25, at 9:30 p.m. Norton said a Canton ladder crew assisted with searches and overhaul operations and remained on scene for nearly two hours. During the week of January 21-27, firefighters responded to 103 service calls. None of the calls were opioid related, according to EMS director Kevin Hurley.

CPD to host Blue Hills criminal justice interns

The Canton Police Department will welcome one or two Blue Hills Regional Technical School seniors to serve as interns this spring as part of the school’s criminal justice program. According to Lt. Charles Rae, Blue Hills introduced the criminal justice program a few years ago and will be graduating its first class of 13 students this spring. In lieu of the students’ senior project, they will be doing an internship out in the field for their final semester. Rae said the Canton PD anticipates having one or two students as part of the internship program on an annual basis. Students will be observing various aspects of police work, including patrol procedures, emergency dispatch, juvenile services, investigations, and traffic enforcement.

CAASA Report: Free Narcan Training

The Canton Alliance Against Substance Abuse (CAASA) will host a free training program on the opioid overdose reversal drug Narcan (Naloxone) on Wednesday, February 13, from 6-9 p.m. at the Canton Senior Center, 500 Pleasant Street. Resources and refreshments will be available and Narcan kits will be provided.
