Brown, Albert J.

Albert J. Brown of Canton passed away peacefully while surrounded by his loving family on February 14, 2019.

Born and raised in Roxbury, Albert grew up in his grandfather’s three-decker amongst relatives. As a city kid and young boy, he often hopped the back of trolley cars, riding to downtown Boston to shine shoes for sailors in port.

As a young man, Albert wanted to serve in support of the Korean Conflict and enlisted in the Army National Guard. During training he earned medals for sharpshooting. The conflict was resolved prior to deployment and he remained in the Guard for several years.

Albert worked in construction as a licensed operator of heavy equipment and was employed by Hugh Nawn Inc. In addition, Al worked weekends for one of the many construction companies contracted to dig the foundation for Boston’s Prudential Building.

After leaving the construction industry, Al drove tractor-trailers for Drake’s Bakery with daily routes to New York and New Jersey. Later, he became a transport driver for Star Market, driving interstate throughout New England until his retirement. While employed by each company, Albert never missed a day of work.

Al was a member of the Teamsters Local 25.

Albert was the loving son of the late Mildred Brown and was predeceased by his sister Barbara. He was the stepson to Andrew Shenk and half-brother to Andrew Shenk Jr.

Albert leaves his wife of 61 years, Theresa Coughlin, who was his lifelong love and best friend. He was the proud father of Theresa, Cheryl, William, and Pamela, each of whom will remember growing up with adventurous vacations, spontaneous weekend trips, and his enjoyment of holiday celebrations. He enjoyed gatherings at home with family and friends.

He was the fun and witty Papa to seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He leaves his thoughtful daughter-in-law Carroll and son-in-law Steve.

Albert was a dedicated parishioner of St. John’s Church in Canton for the past 55 years. He will be greatly missed.

A funeral mass was held Monday in St. John the Evangelist Church in Canton. Burial Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton.
