CHS design team headed to national competition
By Canton CitizenThe Canton Bulldogs Real World Design Challenge (RWDC) team was recently named the winner of the Massachusetts RWDC and is on its way to the national competition to be held in Chevy Chase, Maryland on April 13.
Members of the CHS team include Guy Blochstein, Ryan Carney, Andres Castro, Devin Chen, Austin Cox, Dhanush Narayana, and Christian Pushard. As part of the state competition, this team virtually designed an unmanned aerial vehicle, more commonly known as a drone, and developed a business plan for implementing their design in an urban environment. Currently, the team is working on improving their design and optimizing their business plan to meet the new national challenge criteria. At nationals, they will present their redesign to a panel of judges and field questions to support their design decisions.
The Real World Design Challenge (RWDC) began in 2008 and is in its 10th year of implementation. The RWDC supports Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education in high schools through their annual competition that provides students with the opportunity to apply the lessons of the classroom to the technical problems currently faced by the engineering community. The RWDC helps to motivate and prepare students for the STEM workforce and teach innovation. With training and support by mentors, students learn the technical elements of aircraft design. Through their participation in RWDC, students develop STEM and business skills working through an engineering problem. The results show that students who participate in the Real World Design Challenge enter STEM fields and help grow this much needed workforce!
The team would like to thank pilots Billy McGonigal and Kevin Saurault for sharing their expertise. To support the team’s trip to nationals, please visit their Facebook page @CantonRWDC.
