Man About Canton: Repairing the Rink

According to a recent article in the Canton Citizen, selectmen have accepted the recommendation of Town Administrator Charlie Aspinwall to award the contract for the renovation of the Metropolis Skating Rink to the BC Construction Company of North Reading for $8.77 million, over $700,000 below the engineer’s projected cost. Aspinwall expects construction to begin this spring, pending completion of contracts and agreements with the town’s insurance company.

Speaking about Charlie Aspinwall, the Board of Selectmen recently approved a new three-year contract, upgrading his salary to “the middle of the road” of town administrator salaries. Aspinwall’s base salary will be $198,000 for fiscal year 2019 (July 1, 2019-June 30, 2020).

Dave Murphy recently resigned as the town administrator in Randolph. He left his salary of $192,000 for a job in Quincy with a $50,000 pay cut. Apparently, Randolph is becoming a tough town to work in.

John McCourt has been appointed by the Board of Selectmen as a full-time member of the Canton Zoning Board of Appeals. McCourt replaces Gary Vinciguerra, who recently resigned from the board.

New York-based Spear Street Capital, new owners of the former Reebok headquarters on Royall Street, spent $500,000 to clean the buildings and will be looking for up to four new tenants. They have rebranded the property, which consists of four main buildings on 42 acres, as “The Block.”

Two great horned owls are nesting in the woods behind the Museum of American Bird Art building off Washington Street.

The first episode of the documentary series Dead of Winter, airing on Investigation Discovery, revisited the 1986 murder of Canton High School freshman Shaun Ouillette by his classmate Rod Matthews. The show highlighted the late Canton Police Officer Tom Kelleher and retired Canton Detective Chip Callery, who both gave insightful information into the investigation surrounding the murder and the trial that convicted Matthews. The show also featured interviews with Jeanne Quinn, Shaun’s mother.

As reported recently in the Canton Citizen, a new Best Western Hotel consisting of 90 rooms will be constructed on land behind Prestige Car Wash & Gas at 925 Turnpike Street. The developers are Ronen and Nir Drory of the Titanium Group, who also own the Prestige companies.

The Canton High School girls basketball team recently beat Oliver Ames 65-56. It was their first win over Oliver Ames since 1993.

CHS Athletic Director Danny Erickson appointed head Canton High School football coach Dave Bohane as the new head coach of the CHS varsity girls softball team.

The Boston Red Sox open up their spring training schedule against MAC’s alumni, Northeastern University, on Friday, February 22, in Fort Myers, Florida, starting at 1:05 p.m.

The Neponset Valley Chamber of Commerce has changed its name to the Neponset River Regional Chamber effective January 31. The chamber, established in 1894, will be celebrating its 125th anniversary this year. It serves the needs of businesses in a 12-town region, including the town of Canton, stretching from Route 95/128 to Route 495 southwest of Boston.

The New Hampshire State Supreme Court, in a 3-2 ruling, upheld the conviction of three women who were arrested for going topless on the beach, finding their constitutional rights were not violated. The women may appeal the ruling to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The Canton High School Chapter of the Junior State of America and the Blue Hills Civic Association will hold their Annual Candidates Forum on Monday, March 18, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the community room of the Canton Public Library.

Selectmen have decided to sell the vacant Gridley School building on Washington Street. A developer would like to convert it into two residential units.
