Firefighters, police officers honored for rescuing baby
By Mike BergerAt the March 5 Board of Selectmen’s meeting, Fire Chief Charles Doody, Police Chief Ken Berkowitz, and members of the BOS honored two police officers and a crew of firefighters who quickly responded to a call of a baby in respiratory distress.
Police officers Steve Saraf and Don Stapleton, first on the scene, cleared the baby’s airways and applied CPR until firefighters arrived. The responding firefighters then continued CPR and transported the baby to the hospital. The firefighters included Captain Andy Morgan, Doug Connor, Leo Reardon, Michael Doody, and regional dispatcher Michael Salvi. The baby, Josie, is doing fine and she and her parents, Kim and Jamie McCourt, along with brother James were in attendance at the meeting to say thank you to the emergency responders.
Berkowitz said all of his officers are trained first responders and many are also certified EMTs. The officers are recertified annually and the chief said the training is used almost every day in some capacity.
“It’s a great example of the diversification of the situations our officers face,” he said. “Last week we were commending officers for their response to an armed home invasion with an assault rifle, and this week it’s for breathing life back into a choking baby. It’s what makes our job so remarkable. I’m always humble and grateful both as the chief and as a resident for the job our police officers and firefighters do.”
