By Canton CitizenWilliam G. Doherty, Jr., 80, of Canton, passed away peacefully March 15, 2019, at home surrounded by his four loving daughters after bravely battling cancer for 11 months.
Bill, as he was known to many, was born in Jamaica Plain to William Sr. and Mary (Kelleher) and grew up in Milton. He graduated from Milton High School in 1955 and received his associate’s degree from Boston University and his bachelor’s degree from Curry College. Bill made his career alongside his father at the New York Life Insurance Company.
Beloved husband of the late Jane C. (Kenney). Loving father of Terri DiGiovanni and her husband, Craig, of Mansfield, Lisa Doherty of Canton, Julie Doherty of Mansfield, and Mary Timilty and her husband, James, of Walpole. Loving grandfather “Umpie” to Andrew and Benjamin DiGiovanni of Mansfield and Maryjane and Kaitlin Timilty of Walpole.
Bill loved playing golf and was a member of Wampatuck Country Club in Canton for many years. After his retirement, Bill enjoyed working as a starter at Ponkapoag Golf Course.
An avid Boston sports fan, Bill was a member of the Boston Braves Society and the Red Sox Fan Club. Bill held season tickets for the Boston Bruins, Boston Celtics and New England Patriots for decades. A college football and Notre Dame buff, his trip to South Bend and Cooperstown with his daughters were part of his treasured memories.
A funeral mass was held Wednesday in St. Gerard Majella Church in Canton. Burial Canton Corner Cemetery, Canton.
