Cape Cod Islanders to relocate to Canton SportsPlex
By Canton CitizenThe Cape Cod Islanders junior hockey team recently announced that it will be calling the Canton SportsPlex in Canton home beginning with the 2019-2020 season and will be renamed the Canton Cubs.
“We have operated on Cape Cod since our inaugural season in 2008,” said Chief Operating Officer Scott Hogan. “Unfortunately, the Falmouth Ice Arena informed us earlier this year that they would not be able to maintain the relationship that we began in 2015.”
Prior to moving to Falmouth, the organization called the Tony Kent Arena in Dennis home for two years and began operations as the Cape Cod Cubs playing home games at the Hyannis Youth and Community Center in Barnstable.
“With the relocation, we will also rename the team to the Canton Cubs to maintain our history and tradition,” Hogan said.
The organization won back-to-back IJHL championships in 2009 and 2010 when they were known as the Cape Cod Cubs and were NA3EHL Eastern Division Champions in 2015. In over 10 years of operations, the Cubs have helped over 35 young hockey players reach their dreams of playing college hockey and six players have also had an opportunity to play hockey professionally. The team will continue to wear the black and gold.
The Canton Cubs will continue to play junior hockey in the competitive NA3HL, which has approximately 36 teams throughout the U.S. “We are very excited to be relocating to a passionate hockey community and look forward to playing our home games at the Canton SportsPlex next season,” Hogan said.
The Canton SportsPlex also is home to the Boston Jr. Terriers.
A presentation to and final approval by the USA Hockey Junior Council is expected by June 7, 2019.
