Vote ‘Yes’ at TM on plastic bag reduction article

By

Dear Editor:

As a concerned citizen of Canton and our beautiful planet, I am writing to ask all fellow Canton residents to vote ‘Yes’ at annual town meeting to ban plastic bags at retail. Convenience of use should not dictate our use of an item that takes over 1,000 years to fully break down. While our area supermarkets do offer bins for recycling the bags, less than 10 percent of all single-use bags are actually recycled. Anyone driving along Neponset Street, or frankly anywhere in town, has seen bags that have made their way into tree branches, causing a hazard to wildlife. We have also seen bags carelessly thrown out, only to be stuck in storm water drains. All of those bags eventually break down as a micro plastic and make their way into our water supply and the food chain. Please vote ‘Yes’ to ban them from Canton and more importantly, please attend town meeting starting on May 13 in the Canton High School auditorium.
