News Notes: Meat cleaver robber suspect arrested
By Mike BergerCanton police on Tuesday announced the arrest of an 18-year-old Sharon man who is wanted in connection with a rash of recent armed robberies in the Cobb Corner area.
The suspect, Matthew Tiernan, was apprehended in Canton shortly after midnight on Tuesday after a brief pursuit and subsequent struggle with officers. He had been spotted in the area near Domino’s Pizza at 22 Washington Street and was wearing attire that matched the description of the suspect in two recent robberies — including all-black clothing, a black mask, blue scarf, and gloves with the Patriots logo on them. He was also riding a “distinct electric bicycle” that was seen on video footage from the robberies and was found to be in possession of a meat cleaver — the same instrument that was brandished at store clerks in the recent robberies …

Officer injured in malicious damage incident at carnival
A Canton police officer is recuperating from a knee injury suffered while trying to make an arrest at the Trinity Carnival on Blue Hill River Road on Saturday, May 25, around 6:45 p.m. Obieze Bobby Uchendu, 36, of Boston, was arrested and charged with vandalizing property, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, bicycling on the highway, and three counts of assault and battery on a police officer. Deputy Police Chief Helena Rafferty said the suspect allegedly slashed the tires of vehicles parked at the carnival and took off on a bicycle and exited onto the highway.
Suspect arrested in series of laptop thefts
After a five-month investigation, Canton police have made an arrest in connection with a series of computer thefts from Canton businesses. On Tuesday, May 21, at around 10 p.m., police arrested Reginald Shepard, 57, of North Attleboro and charged him with five counts of breaking and entering into a building in the nighttime for felony and five counts of larceny from a building. The thefts were reported at the Salvation Army, Lojack and Arnold Industries, and Mansfield police are probing similar cases of theft in that town.
