Henry, Grace F.
By Canton CitizenGrace F. Henry of Canton passed away peacefully on May 23, 2019. She was 90 years young.
Her husband, David C. Henry, the love of her life through 68 years of marriage, passed away in September 2016. Grace was the daughter of the late John and Helen (Hardy) Whooley. She was the loving sister of the late Eileen Gallagher (George), John “Sonny” Whooley (Audrey), James Whooley (Constance), and Robert Whooley (Anne). Grace is survived by her two sons and their families: David F. Henry and his wife, Patte, of Jacksonville Beach, FL, and Robert J. Henry and his wife, Beverly Mack, of Harwich.
Grace had five grandchildren: Paul Henry of Boston; Daniel Henry and his wife, Dori, of Baltimore, MD; Christopher Henry of Chicago, IL; Thomas Henry of Mansfield; and Sarah Grace Henry of Somerville. Grace had two great-grandchildren, Liam and Griffin, both of Baltimore. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, and extraordinary neighbors and friends who have been like family to her for many years, and most especially since she lost Dave and during her recent illness.
Grace attended Jeremiah E. Burke High School. After high school, she worked at Rust Craft Greeting Cards until, and following, the birth of her boys. Later, she worked in the electronics industry for 20 years, retiring in 1985.
Grace read voraciously and especially liked detective mysteries. She enjoyed all things Irish and was delighted to visit Skibbereen, whence her family hailed. Most of all, Grace liked people; she delighted in the success and happiness of others, and was a warm presence during times of need. She never forgot a birthday or anniversary, graduation or life event of a family member or friend. Channeling her inner Rust Craft, she always, always sent a card — even for a new house — to celebrate and share her joy in someone else’s happiness. She was a “joy mirror.” Among those who knew her most intimately, she even inspired a “Grace-in-training” curriculum.
The best Mum, Nana, and great-grandmother a family could ever be blessed with, “Patient Grace” will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure to experience her friendship, but will be welcomed into her new life by her husband and soulmate, Dave, whom she has missed every day for the past three years. Like him, she may be gone, but “Tis Herself” now.
A funeral mass was celebrated in St. John the Evangelist Church on Friday, May 31. Burial at Canton Corner Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Grace requested donations be made to Old Colony Hospice, whose nurses and aides lovingly cared for her in her final weeks: Old Colony Hospice, 321 Manley St., West Bridgewater, MA 02379. Arrangements by the Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home, 455 Washington Street. For guestbook, see dockrayandthomasfuneralhome.com.
