Canton Police Officer Michael Chin is drawing praise from his superiors for his efforts in stopping a suspected thief who fled from police and crashed a stolen car into a truck on Route 138 on Saturday morning, June 15, around 10:15 a.m.

The suspect, Bernaddy Mondesir, 20, of Brockton, was taken to the hospital for precautionary reasons and later released into police custody. The driver of the truck was not injured in the accident, but the other vehicle sustained heavy property damage.

Mondesir was held in police custody until his arraignment on Monday, June 17. He faces charges of receiving a stolen motor vehicle, multiple counts of receiving stolen property under $1,200, larceny under $1,200, operating a motor vehicle with license suspended, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, marked lanes violation, speeding,  failure to stop for a police officer, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, resisting arrest, and multiple counts of breaking and entering into a vehicle at nighttime for felony.

Police were first notified after a package was reported stolen from a porch on Turtlebrook Road, which is located off Route 138. The neighbor gave a description of the suspect and vehicle to police. Deputy Police Chief Helena Rafferty said Chin saw the vehicle and attempted to make a stop. The suspect, according to Rafferty, took off at a high rate of speed before hitting a truck at 555 Turnpike Street, near Arboretum Way. The suspect then escaped from his vehicle and took off into the woods, where he was tracked down and apprehended by Chin.

Police later determined that the black Audi used in the escape had been stolen and a search of the car turned up a drill set that had been reported stolen from a Sawyer Avenue residence earlier that morning.

Police commended Chin’s work and noted that it was not the first time that the former CHS track team member used his speed to track down and apprehend a suspect.
