MassDOT, contractor delay start of Dedham St. detour
By Mike BergerThe state Department of Transportation (MassDOT) along with SPS New England, the contractor working on the Dedham Street improvement project, plan to close a portion of the work zone over I-95 during the hours of 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday at some point in mid to late August for a period of three to four weeks.
The work was originally expected to start this Sunday, July 28, but incomplete utility information from Eversource, Verizon and Columbia Gas necessitated the postponement to August, according to Town Administrator Charlie Aspinwall. The detour is needed to allow SPS to install manholes along the bridge and road route.
The new timeline also gives residents more time to prepare while giving officials a chance to refine detour routes. As of now, both the I-95 South on-ramp and the entrance to Reiser Co. on Dedham Street will remain open.
A copy of the current detour plan can be found on the town website at www.town.canton.ma.us/documentcenter/view/4492. As of today, the plans include routing traffic heading east on Dedham Street (i.e. coming from Norwood/Westwood) onto I-95 south to Neponset Street (Exit 11A), then left onto Chapman Street, and left onto Washington to Dedham Street. For traffic leaving Shawmut Road or Reiser and wanting to head west on Dedham (i.e. toward Westwood), the plan includes routing them eastbound on Dedham toward Washington Street, then onto Route 138 to Route 93 south to I-95 north, and exiting at University Ave. (Exit 13). Local traffic heading west on Dedham will be detoured at Elm Street, then onto Pecunit and Washington before following the same highway route referenced above.
The detour plan was originally listed as an agenda item for the July 23 selectmen’s meeting, but it was withdrawn when MassDOT and SPS postponed the start of the project.

Selectmen authorized mitigation funds to improve the sidewalk, install a handicapped access ramp, and install a pedestrian crossing sign. The work will be done by the DPW.
McCourt also updated selectmen on the Bolivar Pool renovation project, which was overwhelmingly approved by voters at the May town meeting and in a subsequent special election. McCourt said the Planning Board and Conservation Commission have approved …
