The 15th annual Canton Road Race hosted by the Canton Association of Business and Industry (CABI) will be held on Sunday, September 29. The presenting sponsor is the City of Boston Credit Union; the platinum sponsor is Fresenius Kabi, and the gold sponsor is Boston Mutual Life Insurance Company. The kids’ fun run will start at 8:30 a.m.; a kids’ one-mile wheelchair race will begin at 8:45 a.m.; and the main 5K and 10K will begin at 9 a.m. All activities will take place at the Pappas Rehabilitation Hospital for Children at 3 Randolph Street. The race is CABI’s chief fundraiser, and it distributes 100 percent of the proceeds to local Canton beneficiaries. Register by September 14 and receive a free shirt by visiting cantonroadrace.org.

The Canton Choral Society will begin its 17th season on September 10. Rehearsals are held on Tuesdays at 7:15 p.m. in the Galvin Middle School chorus room (2nd floor, across from the gym). Those interested can email cantonchoral@gmail.com or call 781-821-8860.

The DPW received a $150,000 clean waters grant to improve the town’s water system. Cantonites will be happy to hear this.

Julianne Shore, former Canton High School assistant principal and dean of students, has assumed the role of director of technology for the entire Canton school district.

As reported recently in the Canton Citizen, the Connors Wayside Furniture building is finally in the process of being converted into a 26-unit residential building with an adjacent two-unit duplex. One of the 28 units will be set aside in perpetuity for free use by a local veteran with preference given to a Canton resident. The developer hopes to have the project completed within two years. The units will all be two bedrooms and will be for sale as condos. They will be moderately priced.

According to DPW Superintendent Mike Trotta, Canton has 250 miles of roads; 56 miles of drain pipe; 2,300 catch basins; 270 storm outfalls; 2,250 manholes; five dams; 20 town parking lots; and 18 parks.

An interesting change to high school football games was made by the MIAA for the 2019-2020 school year: “A running clock will be used: when a point differential reaches 42 points at the beginning of or anytime during the third quarter or a 30-point differential at the beginning of or anytime during the fourth quarter. It will continue for the remainder of the game.”

According to the Canton Historical Society newsletter, work has been completed on the receiving tomb at the Canton Corner Cemetery. Community Preservation funds helped undertake a portion of the work to restore the large receiving tomb and adjacent vaults in addition to stabilizing gravesites on a nearby knoll. The tomb dates back to 1882 and the vaults date back even further to 1837. The Canton Corner Cemetery is a major contributing element in the Canton Corner Historic District and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The life expectancy for Massachusetts residents was 80 years and 8 months as of 2016, according to the Department of Public Health. Nationally, life expectancy is 78 years and 7 months. It is interesting to note that Hispanic women had the longest life expectancy in 2016, living to an average age of 89.

Don Orsillo, former Boston Red Sox announcer and present San Diego Padres baseball announcer (and graduate of MAC’s alumni Northeastern University), was selected as the Major League Baseball’s top announcer by the Sports Media Blog. The Boston NESN team finished 20th on the list.

According to Canton Recreation Director Liz Francis, the Bolivar Pool renovation could begin in late September or early October and hopefully will be ready for the summer of 2020.

Massachusetts state officials expect to take in nearly $300 million in casino taxes during the current fiscal year from sales at the Wynn Resorts-owned Encore Boston Harbor Casino, the MGM Springfield, and the Plainridge Casino.

The Boston Herald’s Danny V recently listed high school football players to watch and included in his honorable mention list was Canton High School’s quarterback Johnny Hagan and running back Kyle Fitzgerald.

Canton Holdings, owner of the Plymouth Rubber Redevelopment Project, and the Canton Department of Public Works are proposing to fully reconstruct Revere Street. If approved by the Board of Selectmen, work would begin this fall with a completion date in the spring of 2020. The total cost will be over $1 million with $768,000 committed by Canton Holdings and about $245,000 coming either from a selectmen-controlled mitigation account or via a town meeting appropriation.
