CHS girls soccer rebounds vs. Franklin, Stoughton

Coming off their third consecutive defeat to open the season — a lopsided home loss to division rival Foxboro — a very disappointed CHS girls soccer coach Kate Howarth and assistant Sarah Handman decided to change formations and had a long meeting with the players about hard work and effort.
Within a matter of days, the lady Bulldogs were right back on track, climbing into second place in the Davenport with back-to-back wins over Franklin and Stoughton.
In both victories, the Canton girls showed impressive hustle, good defense, and better offensive execution as they combined for nine goals — more than quadrupling their total from the first three contests. Particularly against Stoughton, they displayed better passing, spacing, and generated a number of quality scoring chances.
In the Franklin game last Thursday, Canton battled back from an early deficit as Elisa Diletizia converted a penalty kick to tie the game at 1-1 in the first half. Junior Olivia Rodman, with an assist from Diletizia, sealed the win with a shot into the top corner with two minutes left in the game. Sophomore goalie Elyse Broderick continued her fine season in goal, stopping 15 shots. Also playing well were seniors Caroline Tourgee and Ally Reddish.
On Monday night against Stoughton, Canton came out shooting early as Diletizia, a junior, scored two goals with an assist going to Annie Hoban on the first goal. Junior Mia Gilmore also scored a pair of first-half goals and sophomore Gabby Herivaux found the net just before the half to give the Bulldogs a commanding 5-0 lead. Canton controlled play for most of the half in Stoughton territory as Broderick stopped all five shots she faced.
In the second half, the Black Knights struck for two goals but the lady Bulldogs produced two more of their own, one by junior Jenna Parrella and the last by senior Lauren McCabe. Freshman goalie Marissa Staffiere saw action in net in the second half, stopping four shots.
Reddish, Lauren McCabe, Amy Hylen, Emily McCabe, Tourgee and Kristina Keefe also contributed in the win with good two-way play.
The team is captained by seniors Juliana Agnitti, Alexa Maffeo, and Morgan McCabe and has seven seniors, seven juniors, six sophomores, and four freshmen.
Canton was due to travel to King Philip today followed by four straight games at home. Later in the season, they will join the boys at Gillette Stadium for a special doubleheader versus Sharon. The games are scheduled for October 22 with the girls playing at 5:30 p.m. followed by the boys at 7:30.
