Family displaced after fire destroys home
By Mike BergerA Canton family of six has been displaced and is being assisted by relatives after a fire destroyed their home on Boathouse Road on Wednesday, September 11.
Upon arrival at the scene at around 11:20 p.m., firefighters found heavy fire coming from the attic of the two-and-a-half-story home abutting Bolivar Pond. Fire Lt. Tom Norton said properly functioning smoke detectors alerted residents to the blaze and they were able to escape to safety.
Norton said because a majority of the fire was in the roof, firefighters had trouble getting water onto the flames and the roof of the home eventually collapsed. Norton said firefighters were not able to get the fire under control until 6 a.m. on Thursday, September 12.
Norton said the house is expected to be declared a total loss. He said the fire originated on the rear deck of the home and traveled up the exterior wall and into the attic before being detected. Following an investigation by the Canton Fire Department and the State Fire Marshal’s office, the fire was ruled accidental. Norton said the circumstances of the fire, including the fact that there were no injuries, only serve to underscore the importance of having working smoke detectors.
Firefighters from the communities of Stoughton, Sharon, Norwood, Randolph, Westwood, Milton, Avon and Foxboro assisted Canton with fire operations while Walpole, Dedham and Easton provided coverage at the stations. The Providence Canteen Unit and the Boston Sparks Association Rehab Units also assisted at the scene.
