Update: In a battle for Hockomock League supremacy, the Davenport Division champion CHS golf team fell a few strokes short against Kelley-Rex champ Mansfield, finishing second behind the Hornets at Thursday’s league championship meet. Conor Hunter led the way for the Bulldogs with a round of 81 (T-4) while newly crowned league MVP Chris Lavoie came in sixth with a score of 82. Canton also lost a close match to Mansfield on Friday at Norton Country Club but otherwise had a very productive week with wins over Sharon, King Philip and North Attleboro. The team finishes the regular season at 13-1 overall and now moves on to the south sectional tournament.

With a close win last week over a talented Franklin squad (14-4), the Canton High varsity golf team continued its dominance over Hockomock League competition while running its season-long winning streak to 10 in a row.

The only bad news to come out of last week were the multiple weather cancellations — which forced the Bulldogs to cram their final four matches, plus the league championships, into a four-day stretch between Tuesday and Friday. As a result, the scheduled home match with King Philip on October 15 became a tri-match with KP and Sharon, while their road match with Kelley-Rex leader Mansfield was pushed to Friday, a day after the league meet.

As for the Davenport Division race, Canton had already clinched at least a share of the championship for the third year in a row and came into this week needing one more match win against either Sharon or North Attleboro to claim the title outright.

Last week’s 155-161 victory over the Panthers at Blue Hill Country Club was one of the Bulldogs’ most impressive to date — despite windy conditions leading to higher than average scores.

“This was a good test for us against a real strong Franklin team in tough weather conditions,” said Canton head coach Mike Barucci.

Sophomore Conor Hunter led the way for Canton with a match-low score of 37 that included two birdies. He was followed by Chris Lavoie and Mike Leonetti, who both shot a 39, and Thomas Singleton, Nate MacDonald and James O’Keeffe, who each shot a 40.

In their previous match versus Stoughton at Blue Hill, the Bulldogs set a new season-low team score of 142 behind a top four of Singleton (34), Will Gefteas (35), Leonetti (36) and MacDonald (37). Charlie Cohen and Shawn Burns also turned in solid rounds with scores of 38 and 40, respectively.

Following today’s Hockomock Championship meet and tomorrow’s season finale against Mansfield, the Bulldogs will turn their attention to the south sectional tournament, which features teams of six golfers vying for a chance to compete in the state finals.
