The Canton Fall Classic, a scenic and challenging country course, is celebrating its 31st year on Sunday, October 27. The 10K and 5K run start simultaneously at 10 a.m., while the one-mile kids fun run starts at 9:45 a.m. at B’nai Tikvah at 1301 Washington Street in Canton. The race started as a fundraiser for the temple, and today, a portion of the race proceeds benefit the Canton Food Pantry. Over the past 31 years, the Canton Fall Classic has earned a reputation for being a top south shore race. Registration is open at www.cantonfallclassic.com.

The Village Shoppes of Canton at Cobb’s Corner will hold “Haunted Happenings” activities on Saturday, October 26, and Sunday, October 27. Check the Canton Citizen Datebook for details.

The Canton High School student representatives to the School Committee for the 2019-2020 school year are Corinne Stevens, Fatima Alyaquob, and Mike Dorcellus.

Canton Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jennifer Fischer-Mueller received impressive marks from the Canton School Committee for her annual evaluation.

William “Randy” Scollins was unanimously appointed by the Board of Selectmen as the new Canton finance director. Scollins will replace longtime Finance Director Jim Murgia, who plans to retire in December.

The state Department of Transportation will host a public information meeting regarding the roadway improvements planned for Route 138 from the Milton town line to the Stoughton town line on Tuesday, October 22, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Fuller Village function room, 1372 Brush Hill Road in Milton.

According to a recent article in the Canton Citizen, the town has reached an agreement with the state Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) for a new long-term lease for the Metropolis Skating Rink, which is currently under reconstruction. The town will lease the rink until June 30, 2051, with a five-year renewal option. The annual cost to the town will be $2,000 with a 2 percent annual escalator. Town Administrator Charles Aspinwall, who negotiated the contract, said the state agreed to a flat rate as opposed to a previous fee structure based on rink sales. Construction on the rink began in the spring, and occupancy is expected in the spring or summer of 2020. The lease agreement was reviewed and approved by Town Counsel Paul DeRensis.

According to the Boston Globe, Nikki Olson of Canton, a junior at Ursuline Academy, was named a top performer as an EMass girls soccer player for the week of September 15.

The Boston Red Sox tied a major league record this year with four players reaching the 40-double mark in the same season. They were Rafael Devers, Mookie Betts, Xander Bogaerts, and Andrew Benintendi. MAC feels that the baseballs used this year were “juiced.”

Ed Catabia, head football coach at Blue Hills Regional High School in Canton, has been teaching there for 40 years, was the assistant football coach for 20 years, and has been the head coach for the past 12 years.

According to Canton Fire Chief Charles Doody, the town is owed $131,606 in uncollected ambulance bills. He said the bills are deemed uncollectible after six letters, three phone calls, and communication with insurance companies.

In a recent high school football game, Marshfield erased a 35-0 deficit to stun host Dennis-Yarmouth 43-42. Marshfield never gave up. The win snapped Dennis-Yarmouth’s 20-game home winning streak.

According to the Boston Globe, Massachusetts high school football is switching from NCAA to the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) rules this season. There are 238 differences between the NCAA and NFHS rules.

Former Cantonite and former star quarterback at Dartmouth College Brian Mann was recently named the chief development officer for the University of California Golden Bears’ Athletic Department.
