CHS grad captures USAFL title with Boston Demons
By Canton CitizenBob Brown, a Canton native and former CHS student-athlete, is now a national title winner after capturing the United States Australian Football League (USAFL) Division III national championship as a member of the Boston Demons.
A 2009 Canton High School graduate, Brown plays the forward pocket position on the Demons, who compete in the Eastern Australian Football League.
Including nationals, the team went 8-3 over the course of the season from June to October, starting with a three-game sweep at the USAFL Eastern Regional Championship Tournament held in Raleigh, North Carolina.
At nationals in Lakewood Ranch, Florida, the Demons defeated the Arizona Outlaws, Sacramento Suns, and Austin Crows in preliminary play. They then advanced to the finals where they prevailed over the Columbus Cats to claim the national championship.
Founded in 1997, the USAFL is a grassroots, amateur sports organization dedicated to the development of Australian football and is the sole representative of Australian football within the United States. The sport, also known as Australian rules football, is played between teams of 18 players on an oval-shaped field. Points are scored by kicking the ball between goal posts (worth six points) or between goal and behind posts (worth one point). For more information, go to usafl.com.
