Girls soccer scores big upset win in D2 south opener

Update: The CHS girls soccer team is headed to the south sectional semifinals after knocking off sixth-seeded Somerset-Berkley 2-0 on the road on Thursday. The lady Bulldogs will take on the winner of Holliston-Silver Lake on Monday, November 11, at 4 p.m. at Oliver Ames High School.

Exploding for eight goals and playing tight defense, the Canton High girls soccer team upset third-seeded Southeastern Regional Vocational School 8-0 in a rain-soaked affair Tuesday night in the opening round of the Division 2 south playoffs.

With the victory, the lady Bulldogs (11-8) ran their winning streak to five in a row and now move on to face sixth seeded Somerset-Berkley in the sectional quarterfinals. The game kicks off Thursday at 6 p.m. in Somerset.

The Raiders enter the game with a record of 13-5-1 and are coming off a 5-4 overtime win over No. 11 Falmouth. If the Bulldogs are able to survive and advance, they would move on to play the winner of No. 2 Holliston versus No. 7 Silver Lake in the semifinals at a date and time to be determined.

Canton got goals from eight different players in the win over Southeastern, with six goals coming in the first half. Mia Gilmore, Gabby Herivaux, Elisa Diletizia, Olivia Rodman, Paige Drury, Lauren McCabe, Jenna Parrella and Fay Gallery all found the back of the net as the Bulldogs set a new season high for goals in a game.

Canton came into the tournament seeded 14th in the 18-team bracket after placing second in the Hockomock Davenport Division with an overall record of 10-8. Old Rochester has the top seed at 21-0 and Foxboro, this year’s Davenport champion, is seeded fourth with a record of 14-2-2.
