CAASA to host talk by former NHL star Kevin Stevens
By Canton CitizenOn Monday, November 18, at 6:30 p.m. in the Canton High School auditorium, Kevin Stevens, once one of the National Hockey League’s top power forwards and a two-time Stanley Cup champion, will tell his story about his “Shattered” life destroyed by physical injury and drug dependency.
This program is the first in a speaker series brought to the community by the Canton Alliance Against Substance Abuse. CAASA was established in 2013 to address youth substance abuse and to promote prevention while recognizing the need for intervention, treatment and recovery. The speaker series offers an opportunity to increase community awareness and provide education.
As a child growing up in Pembroke, Kevin Stevens had everything. Friends described him as a “great guy” and his sister described their childhood as being part of an “all-American family.” Excelling at hockey, Stevens won a full scholarship to Boston College, where he became a collegiate star and was selected in the 1983 NHL draft. At that time, his life was just beginning. Stevens will tell his story that took him from being “on top of the world” to being in a downward spiral that spun out of control.
Experimenting with illegal drugs and a serious sports injury, followed by further drug dependency, caused him to lose his playing career, his family, and much of his place in hockey history. Stevens wrestled with addiction for almost a quarter of a century. Now he has found his purpose and will talk about reclaiming his life. The story of his life, which is the subject of a recent documentary (“Shattered”), is one that everyone should hear. Stevens will share his own journey as an example of what may happen after a sports injury and why young athletes need to find an alternative to taking pain medications.
All are welcome to attend this very important program. Community service hours will be provided to student attendees. For more information about CAASA, visit cantonalliance.org. Meetings are open to the public and are held the third Monday of each month at the Canton Police Station on Washington Street at 3:30 p.m.
